How to Use Sod Soil
Prepare the Area
Remove existing grass, debris and weeds. Level the area to create a smooth, even surface. For small areas, consider using hand tools for rough grading to address drainage issues or a hand-powered spreader for overseeding, especially in shaded spots.
Apply Sod Soil
Spread a 1–2 inch layer of sod soil evenly across the area.
Install Sod and Water
Lay sod directly on top of the soil, ensuring each piece is tightly placed. Water immediately after installation to encourage root establishment.
Preparing the Site for Sod
Before laying new sod, start by removing any existing grass and roots, as these can compete with new sod for nutrients and water. Next, rake the area to remove any remaining debris and to level the surface. This preparation will help new sod take root more effectively and create a smooth, even lawn.
Soil Preparation
The soil should be tilled to a depth of at least two inches to loosen and aerate it. This process helps to control weeds, alleviate subsoil compaction and permit bonding of the topsoil to the subsoil. Additionally, tilling improves root penetration, air exchange and water movement, giving new sod the best chance to take root. After tilling, it’s beneficial to mix in organic matter, such as compost, to further enrich the soil. This will provide essential nutrients that support healthy root growth and overall lawn vitality.
Soil Testing and pH Adjustment
Most grass types prefer a slightly acidic soil pH, ranging from 6.0 to 7.0. If soil pH is too high or too low, it can affect the growth and health of new sod. To test soil pH, bring a sample to your local garden center or county Cooperative Extension office. Based on the results, you may need to adjust the pH level by adding lime or sulfur. For example, if soil pH is too low, adding lime can help raise it, while adding sulfur can help lower it if it’s too high. By determining the pH level and adjusting it accordingly, you can create an optimal environment for new sod to thrive.
